Kay, so, I was talking to Alex Devol a little while back (if you don't know him he's an amazing designer and a total dude [link]) I was asking him about how he go a foot in the illustration/animation industry and one of the pointers he gave me was to give out free postcards/fliers to companies you want to eventually work with, in the hopes that even if they don't respond they'll hopefully hold on to it because it looks nice. So that's what i set out to do this afternoon and eventually this is what i coughed out. I've been told (and i had this suspicion myself) that it's abit dull and not playing up to my strengths enough : (
So what i'm asking is (if you'll excuse how shamelessly attention seeking this sounds) what aspect of my work do you like the most and would be silly of me to overlook when trying to sum up what i can do in a postcard. Like if there's been a part in one of my games or films where you've been like "damn Adam, make that scene into a print"

Any of your half-cute half-creepy characters always go down a treat, and I'd say are pretty iconic of you and your art cuz.

I like the unique style of your little villages combined with your landscape techniques.
I think the way you make fog and water or other kind of ambience is really impressive.

I like the colors you picked (although I prefer your pastel tones) and the shapes you made up. But the text is hard to read, although that's basically the most important for you. However, what I always liked about your art are your compositions. I think that regarding the composition, this picture is under your strengths because it looks too crowded and there is no clear center of focus. Maybe you should go over and question each shape, if it's neccessary in the composition. By the way, I'm a little confused because as far as I remember, this is the first abstract picture I see from you. You should also create more tension by creating more contrast in dark/ bright.

i personally think that this looks like a generic vector image.

What your good at is creating quirky, mystical places. with little details that make the viewer want to visit. Also, creatures with loads of character.

You seem to have dropped your usual colour palette too :( dont get me wrong, these colours are great. but, they aren't the colours i would associate to your work.

i personally think that a combination of these are what makes you, you:

I like the design, but I agree with Puglord; it could use a character or two or three. Also, although I like the font you use, it's not too legible. Maybe put it in another standard font at the bottom right too?

Like some have said before, you definitely need some sort of character to identify with. I also like how you use a lot of neutral colours in stuff, so I would recommend some sort of fantastical but charming scene.

i'd say make a sort of hilly thing, with an actual skyrail on the card, and then have a bear somewhere. also the website should be a bit easier to read, because that took me a while to understand.

also i was wondering how you draw these sorts of things. do you just go into your program (photoshop, illustrator, gimp...i dunno what you use) and then just draw without using outlines? it's something i want to try, but i don't know where to start.

i actually do quite the opposite :D i use flash which i find is a nice medium between illustrator and the intuitive nature of photoshop. I draw out a basic shape with the pencil tool to create an outline, fill it with a gradient, then delete the line which leaves a nice clean shape. If you were using illustrator you'd probably just have the outline as invisible to get the same effect. I just like using flash for how freehand you can make it.

it may be too much to ask, but if your up for it, it would be cool if you made a tutorial. it's a lot easier to understand stuff if there's pictures. at least for me. thanks for explaining though, i'm going to try to do this :)

okay well i'm looking at this, and the first thing i think is thats interesting. which it is, but there is so much purple and it made me with of the treshire cat from alice in wonderland. But although the picture is complex the purple washes everything over so much it makes me just wan stop looking at it. As for your games, which i adore, i've never really loved the background, i've just loved the characters. Sure your style is great but what i love about the games are the ghost and squirrels or any creature that exists in them. I would suggest going for something with a wider range of colour and maybe a character of yours, but i'm just weird like that.

Though I sort of agree its not really playing up to your strengths from what I've seen. Though I really love this, I think if you're trying to show people your full potential, this isn't the best you can show.

I think you're best with whimsical landscapes, like you've been doing in Nevermore. I loved Lapidarian Heights for some reason.

well, I like the melancholy and, well, loneliness in your work, if you get what I mean. So just, some kind of empty landscape/scenery with one or a few characters in it.
One thing that is for sure is that you should DEFINITELY put a character in those postcards, not just abstract shapes and shiny colours.
This postcard is just not.... you.
You're an amazing artist man, show it to the world!

and oh yeah, I also agree with the other comments on the fact that you should use an other font, because this one is a little hard to read.

Or maybe a deserted town, in the style of Nevermore. That would be great too.
